BLEN II
"Honoring the Painter Poet Gebre Kristos
Dsta"
| |
Gebre Kristos Desta can truly be called
the father of modern Ethiopian art.
The raw emotive power manifested in
his work transcends the barrier of
time and reaches us with the same
poignancy as when it first captured
the world in the 1960’s. Both
his paintings and poetry unleashed
waves of controversy and transformed
the landscape of art in Ethiopia.
Our 4th annual show not only honors
Gebre Kristos; we devoted this Blen
Art Show to thank the man who opened
the door to wider possibilities for
many Ethiopian artists. Click on the
image above to download the full Blen
Catalogue in pdf, which includes
a full bio of Gebre Kristos Desta,
descriptions of our featured artists
and other articles. We hope that the
4th Blen Art Show will also present
new possibilities for its audience
– we’re confident that
once you’ve seen a little of
the wealth of Ethiopian art, you’ll
continue to explore |

The
3rd annual Blen Art Show – Celebrating
the Life of Skunder Boghessen, - was
an overwhelming success. Skunder represented
new trends in art, incorporating his
cosmopolitan background into his work.
While older artists had laid the stage
for the introduction of modern art
into Ethiopian society, Skunder can
be credited with bringing Ethiopian
art to the world. His work and life,
as a Pan-African, a member of the
African Diaspora, and a fierce Ethiopian
nationalist, turned the spotlight
on African artists. The 3rd Blen Art
Show focused on the late Skunder Boghessen
and his notable achievements. Click
on html
or pdf to
discover the world of Skunder Boghossian
and view original artwork from last
year’s artists. This 2005 Blen
Magazine covers the life of Skunder
and other artists as well as articles
on modern art movements. |
